Large-scale inspections of perinatal centres carried out by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health

Health Minister, Akmaral Alnazarova, asked the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Control to carry out large-scale inspections of all 69 maternity care facilities to ensure their compliance with infection control requirements in order to ensure the maximum safety for mothers and newborns, while also strengthening the prevention of in-hospital infections, said the Ministry’s Press Office.
“The inspections are not aimed at imposing more penalties but at preventing and eliminating risks and improving the quality of medical care in maternity facilities”, the Ministry added.
At a staff meeting, the Minister stressed that “every case of infection should form the basis for professional assessment and decision-making that will help improve patient safety”.
She also ordered a review of current approaches to investigating infection cases, updating sanitary regulations and Government inspection check-lists with a focus on prevention and providing an objective evaluation of the root causes of each case in order to improve the effectiveness of the national infection control system.
Regional health departments have been instructed to provide medical organisations with the necessary resources for disinfection and sterilisation, personal protective equipment and disposable supplies, as well as organising systemic training for healthcare workers on infection prevention.
“Based on the results of these inspections, roadmaps for further improvements to the infection prevention system will be adopted in each region”, said the Ministry.
